Brazilian born, Connecticut based, Dalton Ghetti carefully crafts the tips of pencils into amazing micro sculptures. These miniature masterpieces are a side project for the professional carpenter, who has been perfecting this art for the last 25 years. Dalton uses a razor blade, sewing needle, a sculpting knife, a steady hand and lots of patience to meticulously carve the graphite which can take anywhere between a few months to a few years. Over time he has broken many works in progress and keeps them in what he calls the cemetery collection. One of the most fascinating things about these tiny works of art is that he has never sold them, only given away to friends as gifts.

Above is the graphic design studio Dowling Duncan’s attempt to redesign the US dollar bill.
While these bills are very beautiful and have some interesting changes (vertical layout, different size bills, educational bits in the design) I think they are way too trendy looking. The design is drastically different than our current bills which would make the transition to the new currency design a huge headache. People would initially be confused about the new sizes, colors and vertical layout. I could also imagine a backlash from traditionalists who would likely think that the new bill design is too modern and un-American with the array of new colors.
With that said, (and I know this is just a fun, fake project) I do think our currency could use a redesign… maybe I will give it a try myself.

Wow! I stumbled upon this amazing calligrapher named Betsy Dunlap. I love her work!! She inspired me enough to go out an purchase a real calligraphy pen and ink… I have a LOT of practicing to do.
